admin Electrolux fridge freezer freezes everything in the fridge, now starts to trip RCD?
I have an electrolux fridge freezer (an old model with the freezer at the bottom and the fridge at the top), have had it for a number of years, sometime ago I was trying to reduce the temperature in the fridge, and the knob ended up being loose, soon afterwards the light in the fridge went off, but it still worked as well as the freezer.
Lately the fridge has started to freeze everything in it, even after switcing it off to defrost, once switched on it continues to freeze everything in it. Now it has started to trip the RCD for all the sockets in the kitchen, I isolated all the devices, and determined it was the Electrolux fridge freezer that is the culprit.
Does anyone know what could be wrong and how it can be fixed?
I'm 95% sure that it is the thermostat. The stat switches your refrigerator on & off when it reaches Optimal temperature & yours isn't switching the cooling off in the chiller. This could be because of a faulty thermostat or in rear cases the end of the thermostat has come disconnected from the back of the evaporator & isn't reading the correct temp (this sometimes happens if the refrigerator has recently been transported). When you defrost it the water runs down a tube into a tray on top of the compressor (which when it runs gets hot & evaporates the water) & because of the amount of ice being defrosted it is over flowing & shorting out the electric causing the RCD to trip (this could cause compressor fault, so it's best to sort the problem before switching the refrigerator on again).
Manual Thermostats are fairly cheap & easy to fit in most refrigerators, if you are competent with electrics (If not it's best for you & the fridge to get a engineer in), however some modern refrigerators have PCB's where the thermostat is built into it, which are more expensive, & harder to replace.
